Janet Werker, a professor in the department of Psychology at UBC, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an honorary society which recognizes accomplished leaders in science, social science, humanities, arts, business and public affairs.
Werker, who received both her Master’s and Doctorate in Psychology from UBC, is the director of the Infant Studies Centre. She has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since June 2001, and a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science since May 2009. Her research focuses on understanding the roots of language acquisition by studying speech perception in infancy.
The Academy membership encompasses over 4,600 Fellows and 600 Foreign Honorary Members from a range of disciplines. Among the Academy’s Fellows are more than 250 Nobel laureates and 60 Pulitzer Prize winners.
The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on Oct. 11, 2014, at the Academy’s headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
